Gebremeskel took 18th place in the junior race of the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh. In the same year he won the bronze medal in the 5,000-meter run at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz . He also won the Ekiden in Chiba with the Ethiopian team on his birthday . In July he qualified at the Diamond League meeting in Paris over 5000 m with the fifth fastest ever run time of 12: 46.81 min for the Olympic Games in London, where he won the silver medal. In 2013 he set a personal best in the 10,000 meter run in Sollentuna with 26: 51.02 m . He then went on to this distance at the World Championships in Moscow , but only achieved a disappointing 16th place.
