Mariel Leigh Zagunis (born March 3, 1985 in Beaverton , Oregon ) is an American saber fencer and two-time Olympic champion .

Zagunis' parents Robert Zagunis and Catherine Menges participated in the 1976 Olympics in rowing. She was Junior World Champion in 2002, 2003 and 2004. At world championships in the elite sector, she also achieved successes since 2000. In 2000 she won gold with the team in Budapest , and in 2004 silver in New York City . In 2005 she won the title with the team again in Leipzig . At the 2006 World Fencing Championships , Zagunis was runner-up in the individual as well as in the team competition. At the 2007 World Championships in St. Petersburg , she came fifth in the singles and seventh with the team. The Pan American Championships in Montreal finished third Zagunis, also a year later in Querétaro . Between 2004 and 2007 she won seven World Cups and was second and third five times. In 2009 Zagunis won a gold medal in singles at the World Championships in Antalya and was Pan American champion in San Salvador , and in 2010 she won both titles again in Paris and San José . 2011 was Muriel Zagunis' most successful year to date: she became Pan American champion in singles and with the team in Reno (Nevada) , won gold in both singles and with the team at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara (Mexico) and reached the world championships in Catania a silver medal in singles, beaten only by Sofja Velikaya , and a bronze medal with the team. In 2012 she was again Pan America champion in Cancún both individually and with the team and won a bronze medal with the team at the World Championships in Kiev .

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , Zagunis won the gold medal against the Chinese Tan Xue . She repeated this success four years later in Beijing when she defeated her compatriot Sada Jacobson in the Olympic final . In addition, the US team won bronze with her.

For the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , Mariel Zagunis was chosen to be the flag bearer of Team USA . In the individual she reached fourth place after she had to admit defeat first to the eventual winner Kim Ji-yeon and then in the battle for bronze Olha Charlan .

In 2013, Zagunis won the Pan American Championships in Cartagena , and the team won bronze at the World Championships . In 2014 she won silver in singles at the World Championships in Kazan .
