Kim Ji-yeon (born March 12, 1988 in Busan , South Korea ) is a South Korean saber fencer and Olympic champion . She fights for the Iksan City Fencing Club .

At the Summer Universiade 2011 in Shenzhen, Kim Ji-yeon won bronze in both the individual and the team. In 2011 and 2012 she was Asian champion with the South Korean team.

In 2012 at the London Olympics , Kim Ji-yeon won gold in singles. She surprisingly defeated Mariel Zagunis in the semi-finals , in the meantime she was 2: 8 behind and started a chase at 10:13, which led to the final score at 15:13. In the final, Kim Ji-yeon dominated the battle against Sofja Velikaja confidently up to 15: 9.

Kim Ji-yeon is the first South Korean woman to receive an Olympic gold medal in fencing and the second South Korean female fencer to receive an Olympic medal after Nam Hyun-hee , who won silver in 2008 with the foil. She is also the second South Korean fencer to win a gold medal in the Summer Olympics after foil fencer Kim Young-ho in 2000 .

In 2013 she was Asian champion both individually and with the team in Shanghai . She also won bronze in singles at the World Championships in Budapest .
