Ruhi Sarıalp
Ruhi Sarıalp (born December 15, 1924 in Manisa ; † March 5, 2001 in Izmir ) was a Turkish athlete who specialized in the triple jump .
Sarıalp celebrated its most significant success at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, where he won the bronze medal behind the Swede Arne Åhman and the Australian George Avery . It was the first ever Olympic medal for a Turkish athlete. It was not until 56 years later that Turkey provided another medal winner in athletics with the hammer thrower Eşref Apak .
At the European Athletics Championships in Brussels in 1950 , Sarıalp was also third. Here, too, he was the first Turkish medalist and for a long time the only one. In 2002, the middle-distance runner Süreyya Ayhan won the second European Championship medal for Turkey.
After his active career, Sarıalp gave lectures at the İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and sat on the board of the athletics department of Fenerbahçe Istanbul .
