George Avery (athlete)

George Avery ( George Gordon Avery ; born February 11, 1925 in Moree , New South Wales , † September 22, 2006 in Woonona , New South Wales) was an Australian triple jumper .

Life

In 1948 he became Australian and British champion and won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in London with his personal best of 15.365 m behind the Swede Arne Åhman (15.40 m) and ahead of the Turk Ruhi Sarıalp (15.025 m). The following year he became national runner-up.

In 1948 and 1949 he was also the Australian long jump champion .

His daughter Robyn Glynn took her late father's ashes with her to the 2012 Summer Olympics and scattered them over the inrun of the triple jump facility. She said the family decided in 2000 to bring her father back to the Olympics.
