Muhlis Tayfur (* 1922 in Erzurum ; † July 21, 2008 in Izmir ) was a Turkish wrestler .

Career

Muhlis Tayfur started wrestling as a teenager. He moved from Erzurum to Izmir and trained there mainly under the guidance of Adil Candemir . He focused on the Greco-Roman style . He weighed about 80 kg and started in the middleweight division .

In 1947 he started at the European Championships in Prague in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division. With victories over Schmid, Switzerland, Eino Virtanen, Finland, and Ercole Gallegatti, Italy, he reached the final battle in which he was defeated against Nikolai Below (wrestler) from the Soviet Union. He became vice European champion.

In 1948 he represented his country at the Olympic Games in London in the same style and in the same weight class. In London, Muhlis Tayfur won over Klaas de Groot, Netherlands, Alberto Bolzi, Argentina, and Anton Vogel from Austria. In the 4th round he lost to Juho Kinnunen from Finland. In the 5th round he had a bye, while Juho Kinnunen lost against Axel Grönberg from Sweden in this round and was eliminated because he had scored 5 missing points. Since Muhlis Tayfur didn't have 5 missing points after the 5th round, he was able to fight for the gold medal against Axel Grönberg in the 6th round . But he lost this fight on points and thus won an Olympic silver medal .

At other international championships (Olympic Games, World and European Championships) Muhlis Tayfur was not at the start.

After his wrestling career, he worked as a wrestling trainer in Izmir, where he died very old in 2008.
