Sibel Şimşek (born October 10, 1984 in Osmancık ) is a Turkish weightlifter . She is three times European champion.

Career

Sibel Şimşek started lifting weights at the age of 12. She is a member of the Kocaeli Büyükşehir Belediyesi Kağit Spor Kulübü sports club . Your trainer is Mehmet Üstündağ. At a height of 1.70 meters, it is relatively large for the weight classes in which it has competed so far. This makes your lifts look particularly elegant.

Sibel Şimşek's successes began in 1999, when she won medals at two European Junior Championships (U17, U20). She won another medal at a junior European championship in 2002 in Nuoro , Italy , where she placed 2nd in the weight class up to 69 kg with 215 kg (97.5-117.5) behind Sarema Kassajewa , Russia , who weighed 230 kg 100–130) scored, occupied.

Already in 2001 she was at the European Senior Women Championships in Trenčín and finished 10th in the weight class up to 63 kg with 190 kg (85-105). She took the same place at the World Championships in Antalya that same year . There she increased her performance in the weight class up to 69 kg body weight in a duel to 212.5 kg (97.5-115). Both competitions were won by the Russian Valentina Popova , who was convicted of doping several times later and, as a repeat offender, was suspended for life.

In 2002 Sibel Şimşek started at the World Championships in Havířov in the weight class up to 69 kg body weight. There she achieved 227.5 kg (102.5–125) and was behind the Chinese Liu Chunhong , 255 kg, Tulia Angela Medina , Colombia , 232.5 kg a. R. Nahla Mohamed , Egypt , 230 kg, 4th place. In the individual disciplines, however, she won a bronze medal with her performance.

At the 2003 European Championships in Loutraki , Sibel Şimşek managed 232.5 kg (105–127.5) in the class up to 69 kg body weight and was fourth behind Valentina Popowa, 245 kg a. Milena Trendafilowa , Bulgaria , 237.5 kg, who like Popowa was exposed as a doping offender shortly after this championship and Sarema Kassajewa , 235 kg. At the 2003 World Championships in Hermosillo , Mexico , she succeeded with 230 kg (100-130) winning the World Cup bronze medal behind the Egyptian R. Nahla Mohamed, 262.5 kg (115-147.5), shortly after this Championship had to be suspended because of doping and Liu Chunhong , China , 260 kg.

In 2004 Sibel Şimşek had the first big success of her career. She was in Kiev in the class up to 69 kg body weight with 247.5 kg (112.5–135) European champion in the duel before Tatiana Matwejewa , Russia , 245 kg a. Wanda Maslowskaja , Ukraine , who weighed 242.5 kg. In the snatch, she also became European champion with her 112.5 kg. After this great success, she had to get to know the bitterness of defeat at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , because there she failed three times at her initial weight of 115 kg and was thus eliminated without a duel.

In 2005 and 2006 Sibel Şimşek was not used in any international championships. The reason for this was that she, together with Aylin Daşdelen and Şule Şahbaz, accused the Turkish coach of the women's national team, Mehmet Üstündag, of sexual assault. In 2006, however, she became Turkish champion in the class up to 69 kg body weight, with her reaching 215 kg (100-115) in a duel to win the title.

In 2007 she made a successful comeback at the European Championships in Strasbourg . She started there in the class up to 63 kg body weight, in which she stayed from these championships and won with 215 kg (98-117) the EM silver medal behind Meline Dalusjan from Armenia , who achieved 243 kg (108-135). At the 2007 World Cup in Chiangmai , Thailand , she increased to 223 kg (101-122) and reached 7th place.

Sibel Şimşek also came second at the 2008 European Championships in Lignano . She achieved there 226 kg (105-121) and had to admit defeat again Meline Dalusjan , 235 kg. She did not start at the Olympic Games in Beijing that year.

She celebrated her second victory at a European Championship in 2009 in Bucharest . She won there in a duel bit 236 kg (108-128) before Ruth Kasirye from Norway , who achieved 231 kg. She also became European champion in tearing and pushing. At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang / South Korea , she improved in a duel to 243 kg (108-135). She stayed just behind Maija Manesa from Kazakhstan , 246 kg u. Svetlana Zarukajewa from Russia , 246 kg, won a world championship bronze medal in a duel and a world championship silver medal in pushing.

At the 2010 European Championships in Minsk , Sibel Şimşek won her third European title in a duel. She won there with 244 kg (110-134) and relegated Svetlana Zarukajewa, 244 (110-130) to 2nd place due to her lower body weight.

Şimşek was in the squad for the Turkish team for the 2012 Summer Olympics , where she subsequently won the bronze medal. In 2017, however, a subsequent analysis found that Şimşek was doped at the 2012 Olympic Games. The IOC therefore retroactively disqualified her from the 2012 Olympic Games.
