The Ottoman Empire officially participated in the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens , Greece , with two participants. The other athletes listed here, who achieved a silver and a bronze medal, come from two football teams that competed for the cities of Smyrna and Saloniki, which were part of the Ottoman Empire at the time. Since the concept of national teams did not yet play a decisive role in the first Olympic Games, the medals in the team sports are assigned to the country from which the club comes. The team from Smyrna consisted of local French and English. The team from Saloniki consisted entirely of players from the local club Omilos Filonuson, whose players were all Greeks. Only one player from the Smyrna club and another athlete could be added to the Ottoman Empire.
