Selim Yaşar (born February 20, 1990 in Dolakovo , Chechen-Ingush ASSR , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union as Koloi Kortojew ) is a Turkish wrestler of Ingush origin. In 2015 he became vice world champion and in 2016 he won the silver medal in free style in the middleweight division at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Career

Selim Yaşar was born in Ingushetia in the Soviet Union as Koloi Kortojew. He started wrestling there as a teenager, focusing on the free style. From 2009 to 2013 he started for Russia and since 2014 for Turkey. So far he has been trained mainly by Abdullah Magomedow and Adem Bereket. He has been a member of the Büyüksehir Istanbul Club since 2014.

He played his first international championships in 2009. In June 2009 he was in Tbilisi junior European middleweight champion in front of Dato Marsagishvili from Georgia. In August of the same year he was also Junior World Champion in Ankara. He defeated Arslanbek Alborov from Azerbaijan in the final battle. In 2010 he was again Junior European Champion in Samokow / Bulgaria ahead of Ibrahim Bülükbasi from Turkey.

From 2011 to 2013 he did not take part in any international championships, but he started in many high-level international tournaments and always achieved good placements.

He competed for Turkey for the first time at the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent. He lost his first middleweight fight against Abdulraschid Sadulajew from Russia, but then won a bronze medal with victories over Jambul Zotadze from Ukraine, Mikhail Ganew from Bulgaria and Asland Kachidze from Kazakhstan.

Selim Yaşar also competed for Turkey at the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas. He came there in the middleweight division to victories over Jaime Yusept Espinal from Puerto Rico, Sandro Aminashvili from Georgia, Pedro Francisco Ceballas Fuentes, Venezuela and Magomedhadschi Chadijew from Azerbaijan. In the final he faced Abdulrashid Sadulajew, to whom he lost again. He became vice world champion.

At the 2016 European Championships in Riga, Selim Yaşar won in the weight class up to 86 kg, initially over Ion Gurmuzachi from Moldova, but lost in his next fight just after scoring against Ibragim Aldatow from Ukraine (tied 2-2). Since Aldatow did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only finished 8th. He was all the more successful at the Olympic Games that year in Rio de Janeiro, where he won the silver medal with three wins and one defeat in the final against Abdulraschid Sadulajew from Russia.

He secured another medal at the 2017 European Championships in Novi Sad . He won there over Boban Savev, Macedonia and Benjamin Sezgin from Germany, then lost to Alexander Gostiew from Azerbaijan and in the battle for a bronze medal came to a victory over Zbigniew Baranowski from Poland. At the 2017 World Cup in Paris, Selim Yaşar only finished 7th because he lost after two fights against Vladislav Waliev from Russia and did not reach the final.

In the following years he was unable to build on these successes. In Turkey he was overtaken by Fatih Erdin .
