Romela Begaj (born November 2, 1986 in Tirana ) is an Albanian weightlifter .

Career

Romela Begaj took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, where she was sixth in the category up to 58 kg with a total performance of 216 kg; the same duel performance was enough for 11th place at the 2012 Summer Olympics .

She won the silver medal at the European Championships in 2008 in the category up to 58 kg with a total performance of 212 kg. In 2009 she was third in the category up to 58 kg with a performance of 207 kg, at the European Championships 2010 in Minsk again second with a duel of 207 kg (= 96 kg + 111 kg).

At the European Weightlifting Championships in 2011 , she remained without a valid attempt. In 2012 she again won the silver medal at the European Championships in Antalya with a duel of 215 kg (= 102 kg + 113 kg) behind the same performance but 360 g lighter Boyanka Kostova from Azerbaijan. The 102 kg represent the European title in snatch.

She was first in the tear at the 2014 World Championships . However, she tested positive for stanozolol during the doping control and was banned for two years. At the 2017 World Championships , she competed in two weight classes higher (up to 69 kg). At the competition in Anaheim she took silver behind the Colombian Leidy Solís with 235 kg (= 107 kg + 128 kg). In the tear she won the competition by one kilogram and was honored as world champion.
