history

After Vasco da Gama arrived in 1498, the country became a Portuguese colony . Until its independence in 1975 it therefore had no Olympic representation of its own. The Mozambique NOK was founded in 1979 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year .

The Olympic history of Mozambique began with the participation of the People's Republic of Mozambique in the 1980 Summer Olympic Games in Moscow , which were boycotted by a number of Western countries . The country also took part in the subsequent 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, unlike most other socialist people 's republics , which in turn boycotted the Games. Mozambique has taken part in all summer games since its NOK was founded .

The greatest success for the CONM was the gold medal of the middle-distance runner Maria de Lurdes Mutola at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney . Before that, at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta , where she was also the flag bearer of the Mozambican delegation, she won the first and so far only other Olympic medal for Mozambique with her bronze medal. So far, the country has not sent any athletes to the Winter Games (as of 2014).

In 2004, CONM was one of the founding members of ACOLOP. Since then, the country has participated in all Jogos da Lusofonia , the games organized by the ACOLOP for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries . Mozambique was able to win several medals every time it participated, including several gold medals at the 2006 Games in Macau and the 2014 Games in Goa .
