The Comité Olímpico de São Tomé e Príncipe (COSTP) is the National Olympic Committee (NOK) of the African island state São Tomé and Príncipe . It resides in the Palácio dos Pioneiros in the Bairro Quinta de Santo Antonio, a district of the capital São Tomé . President of the COSTP is João Manuel da Costa Alegre Afonso (as of 2014).

The CPSTP is a member of the African NOK Association, the ANOCA , and the Association of Portuguese- speaking Olympic Committees, the ACOLOP .

history

The country had been a Portuguese colony since it was settled in 1471 and therefore had no Olympic representation of its own until its independence in 1975. The NOK of the young state was founded in 1979. In 1993 it was recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Since the 1996 Summer Olympics , the country has participated in all of the Summer Games. He has not yet won a medal. The country has not yet sent any athletes to the Winter Games . (As of 2014)

In 2004 the COSTP was one of the founding members of ACOLOP. Since then, the country has participated in all Jogos da Lusofonia , the games organized by the ACOLOP for the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries . São Tomé and Príncipe had its most successful appearance at the Jogos da Lusofonia 2009 , where it won seven medals, including its first gold medal.
