National Olympic Committee of Somalia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Olympic Committee of Somalia (Somali Guddiga Olimbikada Soomaaliyeed GOS, English Somali National Olympic Committee ) was founded in Mogadishu in 1959 - before the independence of Somalia - and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1972 .

In the same year Somalia took part in the Olympic Games in Munich for the first time . The Games of 1976 boycotted it, along with other African countries due to the participation of New Zealand , whose rugby team before the one against apartheid - South Africa had played. It also stayed away from the 1980 Games in Moscow as a country allied to the USA .

Since the outbreak of the civil war in Somalia in 1991, the National Olympic Committee was able, despite difficulties, to send small delegations to all the Summer Games since 1996, including Beijing in 2008 . It is also involved in the implementation of regional and national sporting events in Somalia.
