The Federação Angolana de Voleibol ( FAVB , port. For: Angolan Volleyball Federation) is the governing body for volleyball in Angola . The FAVB is based in the sports complex Complexo Desportivo da Cidadela , also known as Pavilhão da Cidadela , in the capital Luanda .

The FAVB belongs u. a. the international volleyball association Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and the African continental association Confédération Africaine de Volleyball . She is also a member of the Comité Olímpico Angolano , the National Olympic Committee of Angola.

history

The father of volleyball in Angola is Gustavo Cruz (* 1939), an Angolan of Portuguese descent. He tried long before the country gained independence in 1975, parallel to his work as a football coach in the CD Primeiro de Agosto club . But only afterwards did he succeed in making the idea of an Angolan national volleyball team and the associated creation of a national volleyball association heard. As a co-founder of the national military sports committee Comité Desportivo Nacional Militar (CODENM), General Rui Filomeno de Sá succeeded in implementing the idea. Sá was part of a group of volleyball fans around Cruz.

Sá became the first president of the newly created Federação Angolana de Voleibol in 1978 , Cruz became the first national coach. In the same year the FAVB was accepted by the world association FIVB.

However, the sport has remained in the shadow of other sports in Angola to this day, particularly soccer, basketball and roller hockey. As a result, Angolan volleyball is only irregularly represented internationally. It wasn't until 2013 that an Angolan club took part in the African Volleyball Champions League for the first time in 15 years with the CD Primeiro de Agosto .

The number of volleyball players in Angola is only slowly increasing. The FAVB beach volleyball championship has proven to be somewhat popular . The Campeonato Nacional de Volei de Praia is considered to be the most popular volleyball event in the country and is held every spring as a tournament on the Ilha do Cabo peninsula in front of the capital Luanda.

activities

The FAVB looks after the Angolan national volleyball teams, such as the Angolan national volleyball team for men and the Angolan national volleyball team for women .

You have so far not been able to qualify for either the Olympic Games or the World Championships .

However, both selections were able to take part in the African Championships several times . Third place in 1997 for women and 6th place in 1983 for men can be considered the greatest success.

The FAVB also organizes national competitions, including the national beach volleyball championship Campeonato Nacional de Volei de Praia in the capital Luanda , which is held every spring as a tournament .
