The Federação Angolana de Ténis ( FAT , Portuguese for: Angolan Tennis Federation) is the umbrella organization for tennis in Angola . The FAT is based in the sports complex Complexo Desportivo da Cidadela , also known as Pavilhão da Cidadela , in the capital Luanda .

She organizes u. a. the various national championships ( Campeonatos Nacionais ) and oversees the selections of Angola, including the Angolan Davis Cup team .

history

The nucleus of the FAT and still the main driving force today is the Clube de Ténis de Luanda (CTL), founded in 1924 , the most important tennis club in the capital and the country.

After Angola as a Portuguese colony could not found an independent national tennis association until 1975, the subsequent civil war in Angola (1975-2002) prevented a full development of tennis in Angola, under the aegis of the meanwhile founded and included in the world association ITF and the African continental association CAT Regional association FAT.

The FAT was also excluded from the ITF and CAT competitions after 2003 after it owed various fees and association charges totaling US $ 27,000. A new president, Matias Castro da Silva, was elected for the 2012–2016 election period. Since then, this has been striving to settle all disagreements with the ITF and CAT in order to enable Angolan tennis players to participate in the most important international tournaments again.

successes

Since 2003, only the events of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries have been available to Angolan tennis as an international stage, where both the Angolan women and men were able to achieve successes, such as the two silver medals for women (Agostinha Armando e Helena Gunza) and the two Bronze medals of the men (José Ncau e Armando Pemba) at the 2010 Games in the Mozambican capital Maputo .

Augusto Pinto Ganino is considered the most successful tennis player in Angolan tennis. For the club Sagrada Esperança he won all four national championships from 1985 to 1988 and was a record national player. Then he continued to work as a coach.

The greatest success of Angolan tennis so far is the win of a youth title from the African continental association CAT by Anacleto Neto, who now lives in Canada, in 1989.

With 17 wins and 14 participations in the Davis Cup , Nelson de Almeida was the most successful Angolan player until 2003. Most recently, Nicolau Monteiro from the CTL won the national championship in 2014 and was in the final again on September 10, 2015, against the young talent Danilson Bento from Sagrada Esperança.

Organization and activities

The FAT belongs u. a. the international tennis federation (ITF) and the African continental federation Confederation of African Tennis (CAT). She is also an associate member of the Comité Olímpico Angolano , the National Olympic Committee of Angola.

Matias Castro da Silva, a police officer from Luanda, has been president of FAT since 2012.

The association organizes various tournaments and championships. The most important of these has long been the championship of the province of Luanda ( Campeonato Provincial de Ténis de Luanda ), and since 2007 the association has organized the uniform national championship for men ( Campeonato Nacional Sénior Masculino ) and women ( Campeonato Nacional Sénior Feminino ). He also oversees the selection of Angola, especially the Angolan Davis Cup team .

The FAT operates in a difficult environment, as a large part of the population lacks the means to devote themselves to the comparatively expensive sport of tennis. The traditional and by far the most important tennis club in the country, the Clube de Ténis de Luanda (CTL), had only 60 young players in 2013.
