Martinho de Araújo

Martinho de Araújo (born July 26, 1973 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese weightlifter. He participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , making him one of the first East Timorese athletes to compete for the country in the Olympic Games.

Sporty

At the games in Sydney Araújo competed in the bantam weight class up to 56 kg. When tearing he lifted 67.5 kg after two failed attempts, when repositioning and pushing in the first attempt 85 kg, in the second 90 kg. Araújo failed on the third attempt at 95 kg. With a total of 157.5 kg, Araújo came last out of 20 participants, more than a hundredweight behind the penultimate.

Private

During the Indonesian Operation Donner in 1999, Araújo had to flee Dili from violence by pro-Indonesian militias . One of the militiamen had pressed a pistol to his temple. When he returned, he found that his sports equipment had been completely destroyed. To exercise, he filled paint buckets with cement and attached them to metal bars. He also practiced with junk, like a truck gearbox.
