Karnam Malleswari (born June 1, 1975 in Srikakulam , Andhra Pradesh ) is an Indian weightlifter . She was the first Indian woman to win a medal in the Olympics .

Career

The 1.58 m tall athlete began lifting weights in 1990 after having previously worked as a gymnast. She was very serious about weightlifting right from the start, leaving little time for other hobbies besides daily training. First successes came in 1993 when she won two medals at the World Championships in Melbourne in the weight class up to 54 kg body weight. Until she got married in 1997, she was very successful at several world championships and won several medals. After their marriage in 1997, she suspended her career for two years. When she returned to the competition in 1999, she had gained a few pounds in body weight and had to start in higher weight classes. Nevertheless, she managed to win the bronze medal in the weight class up to 69 kg body weight at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , the first Olympic Games in which medals were awarded in women's weightlifting. After Sydney she took another break and only started again in 2003 at World Championships. In the meantime, however, the world level among women weightlifters had risen further, so that she could no longer celebrate international success.
