Zbigniew Tadeusz Kaczmarek (born June 21, 1946 in Tarnowskie Góry , Poland ) is a former Polish-German weightlifter .

Career

Kaczmarek grew up in Upper Silesia , played soccer as a teenager , then came to cycling and finally found weightlifting, which he did intensively from 1963 at the sports club LZS Tarnowskie Góry and then at "Gornik" Siemianowice . In 1964 he was already Polish junior lightweight champion and in 1966 he finished fourth in the Polish championships for senior citizens. In 1969 he was used at the World and European Championships in Warsaw for the first time in a major international championship and immediately won the bronze medal in the lightweight. In the course of his further career he won several world and European championships. Highlights of his career were his duels with his compatriot and friend Waldemar Baszanowski , whom he beat at the World Championships in 1970 in Columbus / USA and in 1971 in Lima .

In 1976, a shadow fell on Kaczmarek's career when he was subsequently disqualified for doping after winning the Olympic Games in Montreal and had to surrender his gold medal to the Soviet athlete Petro Korol . In 1982, instead of going on vacation to Greece , he fled with his wife of German origin and his 13-year-old son to the Federal Republic of Germany , where he was naturalized, was allowed to take part in weightlifting championships and was German champion several times. In Kassel and Wolfsburg he became a reliable and high-performance athlete in the team fights of the Bundesliga. He and his wife built a house in Baunatal near Kassel and he worked for Volkswagen. Kaczmarek trained to be a mining technician.
