Norbert Bergmann

Norbert Bergmann (born May 1, 1954 in Essen ) is a former German weightlifter .

Career

Norbert Bergmann started lifting weights at KSV Essen- Borbeck as a teenager . But he soon switched to PSV Oberhausen and in the course of his career also started for KSV 1884 Mannheim and VfL Wolfsburg . He learned the profession of vulcanizer, but later became a representative of sporting goods companies.

He was already very successful as a teenager. In 1970 he took second place in the German championship of the B-youth (age group up to the age of 16) in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight with 277.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. In 1971 he became German youth champion (A-youth) in the middleweight division and increased to 317.5 kg in the Olympic three-way battle. In 1973 he became German junior champion in a duel after the Olympic three-way fight had been abolished by the World Weightlifting Federation (IWF) in late 1972. He reached a middle weight of 270 kg.

In the next few years he also placed himself in the front of the field at the German junior and senior championships. He was German senior champion in 1977 in the middleweight division with 312.5 kg, in 1978 in the middleweight division with 317.5 kg, in 1982 in the light heavyweight division with 335 kg and in 1984 in the light heavy weight division with 325 kg. In the years he fought exciting fights , especially with Klaus Groh , Horst Appel and Jürgen Negwer .

Norbert Bergmann was also successful on the international weightlifting stage. He belonged to the extended world class in middle and light heavyweight. In 1976 he represented the Federal Republic of Germany at the Olympic Games in Montreal and came in 9th place in the middleweight division with 310 kg in a duel. At the European Championships in 1979 in Varna , he took a good 5th place in a duel in the light heavyweight division with 335 kg (142.5-192.5). At the world championship of the same year in Saloniki he came in 6th place with 340 kg (145-195). With his performance in pushing he even won the bronze medal in Salonika .

In 1982 Norbert Bergmann took 8th (7th) place at the World and European Championships in Ljubljana in the light heavyweight division with 337.5 kg (127.5–190). In 1983 he took part in a world championship for the last time. In Moscow he came with 335 kg (145-190) on the 11th place and took 9th place in the European Championship ranking.

After not being able to take part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow due to the Olympic boycott, he was unlucky in 1984 too, as he had to undergo knee surgery at the beginning of this year that made a start in Los Angeles impossible. There he would have had a good chance of a medal in the light heavyweight division, because the boycott of these games by the Eastern Bloc countries at that time meant that the silver medal in this weight class was awarded with 340 kg. An achievement that, with appropriate preparation, he could have easily achieved.

1985 Norbert Bergmann ended his weightlifting career.
