Jürgen Negwer
Jürgen Negwer (born August 14, 1956 ) is a former German weightlifter . He was a multiple medalist at world and European championships.
Career
Jürgen Negwer comes from a weightlifting family in Wuppertal. His father Günther Negwer († 2016) was a multiple German bantamweight champion and brother Dieter was also a good weightlifter. The best and most talented lifter from the Negwer family was without a doubt Jürgen. He started for SV Bayer Wuppertal and was in 1970 in the weight class up to 52 kg body weight with 185 kg (55-60-70) German B youth champion.
In 1971 he became the German junior bantamweight champion and already scored 257.5 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. In 1972, the last year in which the Olympic three-way fight, consisting of pushing, tearing and pushing, was carried out, he was German junior featherweight champion with 310 kg. In the same year he started with the seniors and came in the featherweight with 310 kg behind Winfried Dunkel from Trier, who achieved 317.5 kg, on the 2nd place.
In 1973 Jürgen Negwer was the first time German champion in the lightweight senior class, scoring 250 kg in a duel and thus Ewald Spitz from Mannheim , 247.5 kg a. Pietro Massalla from Mutterstadt , 240 kg relegated to the places. In 1974 he made his first appearances at the major international championships. He started at the European Championships in Verona in the lightweight and came there with 265 kg in 7th place. At the World Championships in Manila he also achieved 265 kg, which was enough for 11th place.
Jürgen Negwer, who also started his career for SV Donaueschingen and then until the end of his career for VfL Wolfsburg , then completed an apprenticeship as a physiotherapist and therefore had to cut back on training and competitions in 1975 and 1976. At the EC Cup tournament in 1976 in Brussels , however, he represented the Federal Republic of Germany in the middleweight division and finished there with 297.5 kg (130–167.5) in a duel, second behind Norbert Bergmann , Oberhausen, who achieved 300 kg.
1977 Jürgen Negwer was in the middleweight with 300 kg (130-170) German runner-up behind Norbert Bergmann , 312.5 kg. At the World and European Championships this year in Stuttgart , he also started in the middleweight division and finished 12th (10th) with 295 kg (130-165). In 1978 he was only in the final fight of the German team championship at the start and achieved 320 kg (140-180) while standing just 900 g above the middleweight limit, thus confirming his steady upward development.
This positive development was also evident at the German championship in 1979, where he scored 327.5 kg (145-183) in the middleweight duel, with his performances in snatching and pushing each being German records. At the European Championships in 1979 in Varna , he just missed a medal with fourth place. His performance there was 330 kg (145-185). At the world championship of the same year in Saloniki he won his first medal at an international championship. In the duel he was “only” 6th with 327.5 kg (140–187.5), but with his performance of 187.5 kg in jerking he won a bronze medal at the World Championships and was only 2.5 kg behind Roberto Urrutia from Cuba , who hit 190 kg.
1980 Jürgen Negwer was again German middleweight champion. For him 320 kg (1450-180) was enough in a duel. Then he prepared intensively for the Olympic Games in Moscow . The Federal German sports politicians in association with the Federal German government thwarted his plans, because they boycotted these games without considering the interests of the athletes. Jürgen Negwer, who was in the 1980 form of his life, had to watch as the medals were handed out in Moscow without him.
Nevertheless, he made a fresh start in 1981. He was with 340 kg (150-190) German light heavyweight champion, where he was only a few grams in this weight class. At the World and European Championships in 1981 in Lille , he started again in the middleweight division and finished 4th with 340 kg (150-190) in the World Cup and 3rd in the European Championship. He won another EM bronze medal in the snatch with 150 kg. This year he achieved a personal best in pushing at 195 kg.
In 1982 Jürgen Negwer was at the Danube Cup in Donaueschingen , starting in the light heavyweight division, with 340 kg (150-190). He proved his excellent form and would certainly have played a good role again at the 1982 World and European Championships in the middleweight division. He developed severe hepatitis from a viral infection, which resulted in a long hospital stay. Even after his recovery, he was no longer able to train as hard as he had before this illness.
In 1985 he made a comeback. He was that year with 307.5 kg (137.5-170) German middleweight champion. In the following years he was countless times in the VfL Wolfsburg team in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga and achieved performances of up to 320 kg in a duel. In 1990 he took part again in the German championships and was middleweight with 317.5 kg (137.5-180) behind Ingo Steinhöfel , Chemnitz , 330 kg (150-180) and Marc Huster , Meißen , 317.5 kg ( 142.5–175) took 3rd place. In the year 2000 he managed in the Bundesliga team of VfL Wolfsburg as a middleweight 265 kg (115-150) in a duel.
Jürgen Negwer works at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg.
