history

There has been a theater tradition in Baden since the Middle Ages. From 1675 there was a rifle house on Ölrain with a theater room for 500 spectators, which is today the first theater in Switzerland. In 1833, after a fire, the capacity was increased to 800 people. As a municipal theater, the house was used until 1909 and demolished in 1929. At the same time, the first spa theater was built in the spa gardens in 1881. After a renovation in 1897, it was used as a summer theater from 1926 by the then Stadttheater St. Gallen (today Theater St. Gallen ). Towards the end of 1951 this theater was also canceled.

In 1952, as the client and owner, the Baden Theater Foundation commissioned architect Lisbeth Sachs to build a new building not far from the Kursaal , to which a studio building was added shortly afterwards. While the building was technically renewed in the 1990s, there are plans for a conversion and extension today. According to a new cost estimate based on the preliminary project, this will be charged at CHF 28.6 million instead of the expected CHF 16.8 million. That is why the project was put on hold for at least a year for further planning.
