Horst Appel
Horst Appel (born March 6, 1955 ) is a former German weightlifter . He won several medals at world and European championships.
Career
Horst Appel comes from Heiligenrode near Kassel . As a teenager he started out with gymnastics, but soon switched to weightlifting. In addition, he became a member of PSV Phoenix Kassel . He learned the profession of telecommunications technician in Kassel. In the course of his career he was also a member of KSV Langen and AC Soest .
His success began in 1972 when he was in a duel in the lightweight with 292.5 kg behind Klaus Groh , AC Mutterstadt , German runner-up in the juniors and with 295 kg behind Karl-Heinz Radschinsky , ASV Neumarkt , German runner-up in the A youth (up to the age of 18). In 1973 he was with 245 kg (107.5-137.5) then German A youth champion in the weight class up to 75 kg body weight. In the same year he finished at the German junior middleweight championship with 252.5 kg behind Norbert Bergmann , PSV Oberhausen , 270 kg and the like. Karl-Heinz Radschinsky, 260 kg, 3rd place.
In 1974 he increased to 300 kg (132.5-167.5) at the German junior championships in light heavyweight, with which he won 287.5 kg in front of Rainer Herr from Donaueschingen . In the seniors he came in 5th place this year with 290 kg (130-160) in the light heavyweight division. In 1975 and 1976 Horst Appel stagnated due to injuries and illness. His best performances in these years were 300 kg (130-170) in 1975 and 305 kg (130-175) in 1976. In 1975, he helped his club, PSV Phoenix Kassel, to win the German team championship.
From 1977 on, Horst Appel's performance increased again. He finished this year at the German championship in light heavyweight with 307.5 kg (135-172.5) behind Klaus Groh , 325 kg a. Hans Schmidt, Donaueschingen, 312.5 kg, took 3rd place and was used in the middle heavyweight division at the 1977 World and European Championships in Stuttgart . With 325 kg (142.5-182.5) he finished 7th at the World Championships and 6th place at the European Championships.
In 1978 he was in the light heavyweight division with 312.5 kg (137.5-175) behind Hans Schmidt, 320 kg, German runner-up. At the European Championships in 1978 in Havířov, he increased to 330 kg (145-185) and came in 5th place in the light heavyweight division. He took the same place at the World Championships that year in Gettysburg with an output of again 330 kg (147.5-182.5). In 1979 he was third at the German championships with 330 kg (140-190) behind Klaus Groh, 337.5 kg a. Norbert Bergmann, 335 kg. At the EC Cup tournament in Kassel, he then succeeded in winning an international event for the first time. He lifted there in the light heavyweight 332.5 kg (145-187.5), with which he won before Klaus Groh, 330 kg.
In the 1980 Olympic year he was the first German champion in the light heavyweight division with 345 kg (150-195) ahead of Norbert Bergmann, 337.5 kg a. Klaus Groh, 335 kg. At the 1980 European Championships in Belgrade , he came in the light heavyweight category to 342.5 kg (150–192.5), placing third behind the outstanding Jurik Wardanjan , USSR, 367.5 kg and Detlef Blasche from the GDR , 345 kg. Space. In addition, he also won an EM bronze medal in pushing with 192.5 kg. He was unable to take part in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow because of the boycott of these games by the Federal Republic of Germany .
In 1981 Horst Appel was again German champion, but this time in the middle heavyweight division. His performance was 340 kg (145-195) in a duel, with which he won due to the lighter body weight in front of Gerd Kennel , Hostenbach , who also achieved 340 kg (150-190). After this German championship he fell ill again and could not be used in the international championships.
Recovered, the third title win at a German championship followed in 1982. He won that year with 347.5 kg (152.5–195) in the middle heavyweight division again ahead of Gerd Kennel, who again lagged behind him with a performance of 347.5 kg (155–192.5) only because of the heavier body weight. At the World and European Championships in 1982 in Ljubljana , Horst Appel reached middle-heavyweight 345 kg (150-195) and came in 5th place in a duel. With his performance in the jerk of 195 kg he won the bronze medal. The winner of this championship was Assen Slatew from Bulgaria with 400 kg in front of the almost equivalent Alexander Perwi , USSR .
In 1983 Horst Appel won the EC championship in Copenhagen in the middle heavyweight division with 347.5 kg (147.5-200), but fell ill again afterwards and could no longer start at the German, World and European championships.
With this illness, which was also accompanied by a vertebral injury, Horst Appel's career seemed to be finally over. However, he got back on his feet, but only started in team fights for his club, KSV Langen and from 1987 for AC Soest , which he led to win the German team championship that year. His achievements were in 1986/87 in the light heavyweight at 330 kg in a duel.
Since the end of his weightlifting career, Horst Appel has been running a sports and fitness center in Niestetal.
