Werner Schraut
Werner Schraut (born April 25, 1951 in Groß-Umstadt (Hesse); † September 22, 2018 in Groß-Umstadt ) was a German weightlifter .
Career
Werner Schraut started lifting weights at AV Vorwärts Groß-Zimmer at an early age. He remained loyal to this club throughout his career. At a height of 1.60 meters, he always started as an adult in the lightweight category, the weight class up to 67.5 kg body weight.
1966 and 1967 he was each German youth champion. After two weaker years in 1968 and 1969, he was German junior champion in the lightweight with 330 kg in the Olympic three-way battle and for the first time also German champion of the senior featherweight with 320 kg. In 1971 he was again German junior champion in the lightweight with 350 kg in the Olympic three-way fight and took 4th place in this weight class among the seniors with 365 kg.
At the German senior championship in 1972, Werner Schraut took second place in the lightweight with 407.5 kg behind Pietro Massalla from AC Mutterstadt , who achieved the same performance but was a little lighter than him. He was then used in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the lightweight, where he scored 402.5 kg (127.5-125-150). With this achievement he came in 12th place.
In 1973 he did not contest any competitions, but came back to competition in 1974. He was the German lightweight champion with 280 kg in a duel, leaving Ewald Spitz from Mannheim with 265 kg and Karl-Heinz Radschinsky from Neumarkt with 255 kg clearly behind. He won this title in 1975 and achieved 282.5 kg in a duel. At the World and European Championships in Moscow in 1975 he again reached 282.5 kg and thus took 12th place in the World Championship and 9th place in the European Championship.
In 1976 Werner Schraut became German champion for the fourth time. He increased in the lightweight in a duel to 290 kg (132.5-157.5), which he stayed ahead of Karl-Heinz Radschinsky , who achieved 275 kg (122.5-152.5). At the European Championships this year in Berlin (East) he managed to increase to 295 kg (127.5-167.5), which put him in 4th place. Only Zbigniew Kaczmarek , Poland , 305 kg, Jan Lostowski, Poland, 302.5 kg and Sergei Pewzner, USSR , 297.5 kg, placed in front of him. In Montreal he then took part in the Olympic Games for the second time. There he achieved 290 kg (127.5-162.5) in a duel and thus reached 7th place. He was not far from the performances of Olympic champion Petro Korol , USSR, 305 kg, and silver medalist Daniel Senet , France , 300 kg.
At the World and European Championships in 1977 in Stuttgart , Werner Schraut achieved 292.5 kg (132.5-160) and thus finished in the world championship standings behind Roberto Urrutia , Cuba , 315 kg (142.5-172.5), Sergei Pewzner , 302.5 kg (130-172.5) and Zbigniew Kaczmarek , 297.5 kg (127.5-170) took 4th place and won the bronze medal in the European Championship . In the snatch he won an EM silver and a World Cup bronze medal with the 132.5 kg he achieved.
In 1979 Werner Schraut appeared well prepared for the German championship and won the German championship again with 295 kg (130-165). At the subsequent European Championships in Havířov , he scored 130 kg in snatch, but missed his initial load three times in the jerk and thus remained unplaced in the duel. After this failure Werner Schraut resigned from the international weightlifting stage, but he started for his club, the AV “Vorwärts” 05 Groß -zimmer eV, in the 2nd German Bundesliga for a few more years.
