The Kristianstad – Helsingborg railway is an electrified railway line on the Kristianstad - Hässleholm - Helsingborg connection in Sweden . The railway line connects eastern and western Skåne .

The route is called Skånebanan . This is not a historical name, but a term created by Banverket in 1990.

history

Kristianstad – Hässleholm

When Södra stambana was built through Skåne in the mid-1850s , an extension to Hässleholm was built. The residents of Kristianstad investigated the chance of a branch line. The route was financed entirely privately as the Swedish state did not want to contribute any money. The city of Kristianstad assumed the largest share of the construction costs. In 1863 Christianstad – Hessleholms Jernväg (CHJ) was founded. The line was inaugurated in July 1865. Both kings, the Swedish and the Danish, attended the inauguration in Kristianstad. This underlines the importance of Kristianstad to history.

The main competitor of CHJ was Östra Skånes Järnvägar (ÖSJ), which had routes to Hörby and Brösarp . In 1936, CHJ bought ÖSJ and the lines around Kristianstad, with the exception of Blekinge Kustbana , changed hands. In 1944 the CHJ was nationalized and part of Statens Järnvägar . In 1955 the railway was electrified.

Hässleholm – Helsingborg

Helsingborg has been discussing since 1859 that the city should be connected to the Södra stambana. Various alternative routes have been discarded. Finally, in 1865, a railway line was opened towards the southeast to Eslöv . A railway line to the north was built by Hälsingborg-Hässleholms Järnväg (HHJ) in the 1870s and completed in 1875.

Åstorp received another connection to Helsingborg when the Skåne Hallands Järnväg (SHJ) opened the Helsingborg-Halmstad line with the branch line Kattarp-Åstorp in 1885. The time of the SHJ did not last long, the company was nationalized in 1896 and the Västkustbana was created.

In 1940 the HHJ was nationalized and the line electrified in 1943. Local passenger traffic was discontinued in the early 1970s, only to experience a renaissance after 1991. This is seen as a consequence of the Swedish rail reform. In 1991 the Swedish Län were given responsibility for local rail passenger transport . In the same year Pågatåg Helsingborg – Bjuv was established and seven years later it was extended to Åstorp and in 2007 to Kristianstad.

passenger traffic

Since June 17, 2007, all passenger traffic on the Skånebana has been integrated into the Pågatåg network. The detour via Kattarp has been running twice a day and direction since December 13, 2009.

Freight transport

On the route section

  • Helsingborg - Hässleholm are operated by Green Cargo and TGOJ freight trains .
  • Green Cargo freight trains operate between Hässleholm and Kristianstad.
  • Åstorp - Billesholm drove twice a day Green Cargo blocking rides (Vagnuttagningar, since 2009 Spärrfärd ).
  • Åstorp - Vejbyslätt was operated by Banverket's tunnel segment trains , the segments were installed in the Hallandsås tunnel .
  • Åstorp - Helsingborg - Åstorp are operated by Green Cargo freight trains.

Freight trains are not allowed to pass through the tunnel in Helsingborg. For this reason all trains run from Helsingborg godsbangård via Ramlösa and Åstorp to Kattarp. Freight traffic to Västkustbana runs from Helsingborg via Åstorp to Ängelholm , goods traffic from Västkustbana via Ängelholm to Åstorp and then via Bjuv and Ramlösa to Helsingborg.

The busiest part of Skånebana is used by ten to eleven freight trains every day. The route allows an axle load of up to 22.5 tons. It is planned to increase the permissible axle load.

Hanaskog – Karpalund

The route had been out of service for a long time and was in poor condition. By resolution of March 29, 2011, the maintenance of the line was suspended. With effect from December 23, 2015, the Hanaskog – Karpalund line was closed.

Problems of the railway

Long travel time

Travel time between Kristianstad and Helsingborg is around 90 minutes. The same travel time can also be reached by car on the door-to-door route. A competitive travel time should lead to a substantial increase in the number of passengers. However, at peak times this would lead to capacity problems on the Åstorp - Helsingborg route.

Bad comfort

Comfort is good east of Hässleholm, but very poor on the Hässleholm - Åstorp route. This section of the route is technically so outdated that the non-freight traffic has to be operated on time. The maximum transport volume is uneconomical. At Rönne there are geotechnical settlement problems that make it necessary to reduce the maximum speed.

The main problems of Skånebana are:

  • The delays exceed a level which is unacceptable at 30 to 40 percent.
  • The travel time Hässleholm - Helsingborg is too long.
  • Capacity problem on the Åstorp - Helsingborg route.

Future train traffic

Conversions

In 2008 and 2009 the platforms in Bjuv , Åstorp, Klippan , Perstorp and Tyringe were raised and lengthened. In 2010 the second platform followed in Klippan.

Both the tracks, contact lines and sleepers must be removed. At the same time, Banverket stated in a report in 2009 that there are capacity problems between Påarp and Ramlösa because freight trains at Ramlösa have to cross the double-track Västkustbana to reach the freight station, which means stops and waiting times. One solution would be to build a new alternative lane in Ättekulla.

At the beginning of 2011, the tracks and sleepers between Hässleholm and Klippan are to be expanded and at the same time the alternative lane in Ättekulla is to be adapted for 750 m long trains. In 2012 and 2013 the contact lines and masts on the Hässleholm – Åstorp line will be replaced. In the long term, the route is to be converted so that the Hässleholm – Helsingborg section can be driven at 160 km / h. The increase in speed would reduce the travel time between Kristianstad – Helsingborg to around an hour.

Planning

There are plans for a Europabana from Stockholm via Jönköping and Helsingborg to Copenhagen , which should be ready for use in 2030. The Jönköping-Helsingborg route will only be served by fast passenger trains. The Helsingborg – Copenhagen section will be used by heavy freight trains. In this case, many freight trains between Hässleholm and Helsingborg would have to use the Skånebanan, which would be expanded to two lanes.
