The Helge å or Helgeån is a river in Sweden. To the east of Älmhult, it flows through several small lakes in Småland and flows into the Baltic Sea at Hanöbucht . It is one of the Swedish Ramsar areas .

The river has a total length of about 200 kilometers, the drop height is 160 meters. With an annual average discharge of 45 m³ / s, it is possible to use the Helge å to generate energy. Eight hydropower plants were built in its course, delivering a total annual output of 110 GWh.

The course of the river leads first through several small lakes to the west, then to the south, past the southern Swedish cities of Osby , Broby and Kristianstad . There the Helge å flows into Lake Hammarsjön , then continues towards Yngsjö , where the river forks at Härnestad . After Åhus , part of it runs as the Graften river and flows into the Baltic Sea in the port there. In the main course the Helge å flows into the Hanöbucht.

Originally the mouth of the Helge was at Åhus. In 1775, however, after a flood of meltwater and a subsequent unsuccessful drainage operation, the river looked for a new bed and has since had its main mouth at Gropahålet near Yngsjö.
