Gothenburg harbor railway

Vänerbanan is a railway line in Sweden that connects Gothenburg with Kil . Vänerbanan is an art term from more recent times for the Skälebol – Kil route - historically the route was called Bergslagsbanan (this term is used today for the Kil – Ställdalen and Frövi – Borlänge – Gävle routes). The Gothenburg – Skälebol route, on the other hand, is referred to by Trafikverket as Norge- / Vänerbanan.

history

The Grums train station

After Bergslagernas Järnvägar had created a railway connection between Falun and Kil in 1877, the further route from Kil to Gothenburg was tackled. On May 31, 1877, the section was Gothenburg Trollhättan opened on February 26 In 1878, the section Trollhättan-Öxnered. On June 21, 1879, operations between Öxnered and Mellerud began. On December 1st of that year, the entire route to Kil was finally passable.

The line was electrified in 1939/40.

In 1948 the Järnvägar mountain camps were nationalized . The Göteborg – Kil line thus came to the SJ .

Expansion of the route

From 2008, the 82-kilometer route between Gothenburg and Öxnered was expanded to double-track. The first section between Trollhättan and Öxnered (7 km) was opened in 2006. This is where the three-kilometer-long Trollhätte Tunnel was created. The entire route can be driven at a maximum speed of 200 km / h. After the introduction of the new signal system ( ERTMS ), a maximum speed of 250 km / h will be achievable around 2015. The expanded line was opened on December 9, 2012.

traffic

A Bm 73 of the NSB at Öxnered

Six pairs of trains run between Gothenburg and Kil and on to Karlstad every working day. In addition, there is a more extensive regional service (19 pairs of trains on weekdays) from Vänersborg via Öxnered to Gothenburg. Trains from Oslo also run three times a day between Skälebol and Gothenburg.

Among other things, the paper mills located on the route are served in freight transport. After the full expansion of the route in 2012, greater importance for freight traffic between the port in Gothenburg and northern Sweden ( Norrland ) was expected. At the same time, the Västra stambanan between Gothenburg and Hallsberg is relieved .
