Kongsvingerbanen to Oslo

The Värmlandsbahn ( Swedish Värmlandsbanan ), formerly Nordvästra stambanan , is an electrified main line between Laxå in Närke and the border between Sweden and Norway west of Eda Glasbruk in Värmland . The train continues to Oslo via Kongsvinger and is called Kongsvingerbanen in Norway . The Värmlandsbahn provides the fastest railway connection between Oslo and Stockholm and is number 70 in the Swedish timetable .

history

Since the Kongsvingerbahn from Oslo (then Christiania) to Charlottenberg had been in operation since 1865 , the connection between the two Nordic capitals including this line via Karlstad to Laxå on the Västra stambanan Stockholm - Gothenburg was planned. The opening took place in several stages: On December 2, 1866, the first stage between Laxå and Kristinehamn was opened. The Arvika – Charlottenberg route followed just under a year later ; In 1869 the Kristinehamn - Karlstad section was put into operation. The remainder of the stretch between Karlstad and Arvika was completed two years later and the entire line was officially opened on June 19, 1871. The stretch between Laxå and Charlottenberg has been electrically driven since 1937; The Norwegian section followed in 1951. In 1962 a curve was built that bypasses Laxå station so that trains on the Stockholm – Oslo route can run without changing direction .

business

Long-distance transport

Long-distance traffic is operated by SJ AB (SJ). Both X2000 and locomotive-hauled InterCity trains operate mainly between Stockholm and Karlstad. Some IC trains are connected via Kil to Gothenburg, an X2000 train pair runs to / from Arvika. After the X2000 trains, which run continuously from Oslo to Stockholm, were discontinued by Linx (a subsidiary of SJ and Norges Statsbaner ) and cross-border passenger traffic was reduced to weekend connections, IC trains have been running daily between Stockholm and Stockholm since January 2007 Oslo.

At certain times (weekends, summer holidays) there is a night train connection Oslo - Stockholm via Karlstad.

Local transport

Local traffic between Kristinehamn and Charlottenberg was operated by the company merresor on behalf of Värmlandstrafik with type X53 electric multiple units ( Bombardier Regina ) until 2009 . Since 2007, two trains have been tied through to Oslo on weekdays. Tågkompaniet (since April 24, 2019 Vy Tåg ) has been providing local transport on behalf of Värmlandstrafik since 2009 .

The Karlstad - Kil section is also used by trains on the Kil - Torsby and Vänerbana railway .

Freight transport

Green Cargo , CargoNet and Hector Rail dominate the extensive freight traffic . In the past, trains from BK Tåg and Ofotbanen AS could also be found on the route. The company Tågåkeriet i Bergslagen (Tågab) mainly operates regional freight traffic between Bofors, Strömtorp and Kristinehamn with Nydqvist och Holm diesel locomotives of the type TMY , T43 and Z65 , with Kristinehamn normally being the starting point for trains.

future

In the medium term, the Karlstad C train station is to be converted into a connection point for bus transport (Resecentrum). From August 2011, the X2000 trains between Karlstad and Stockholm are to be replaced by new Regina trains. In Karlstad efforts are being made to reactivate the Skattkärr and Skåre stations and to set up a new stop in Våxnäs (between Karlstad and Skåre). The railway line has to be expanded for this, as the capacity is already fully utilized.

Oslo – Stockholm high-speed line

For the connection from Oslo to Stockholm, plans are in progress that include a new railway line from Lilleström via Bjørkelangen to Arvika in Sweden . This double-track line would result in a shortening of the current 155 km via Kongsvinger to 98 km in the future.
