The Letälven is a river in Sweden .

The river rises from Lake Möckeln near Degerfors and flows, with a length of 22 km, in a southerly direction into Lake Skagern . It forms the natural border between the historical provinces of Värmland and Närke . The northernmost part of the river is the former lake Agsjön .

history

The first written mentions go back to the 15th century. At that time the river was called Å . The first fords were built over the river early on and there were also several wooden bridges, but none of these bridges has survived today.

The stone bridge Letälvsbron in Åtorp with a length of 98 meters is the only bridge that currently crosses the river.

In 1931/32 a hydropower plant was built south of the village of Åtorp, which regulates the water flow in the Skagern and generates around 34 GWh annually .

Most of the bank areas along the Letälven are natural. Only in the local areas were they partially adapted to the surroundings. Most of the time, the river is bordered by forests and fields. Due to the many adjacent bogs, the water has a high acid content, which also affects the flora and fauna.
