The Olme (Proteidae) are a family of salamanders . All olms are completely aquatic , have only one simply built lung, and retain two larval gill slits, outer gills, and a neotene , larva-like shape throughout their lives .

There are two genera that occur in North America ( Necturus ) and in Europe ( Proteus ):

Fossils of Necturus from the Paleocene was found in North America. Proteus is known from the Pleistocene of Germany. In addition, two fossil genera from the Miocene are known, Orthophyia from Germany and Mioproteus from the Caucasus .
