The salamander relatives (Salamandroidea) represent a superfamily of the caudate amphibians (caudata or urodela) in the systematic classification . All species share the following anatomical features:
The vertebral bodies are amphicoel to ophistocoel shaped. The adults have no gill holes or external gills; the palatal teeth are in two longitudinal rows.
In addition to "typical" salamanders and newts, the Salamandroidea also includes the eel newts (Amphiumidae) - their body shape is eel-like with four small stubby legs and tiny, reduced toes; they have a comb ridge on their back and live purely aquatic.
