The Klarälven (Swedish name) is a river in Sweden and Norway . In Norway the course of the river has several names.

It is the longest river in Sweden that does not flow into the sea.

The spring on the northeast slope of Mount Brändstöten in Härjedalen

Its source river, the roe , has its origin on the Swedish side. From there it flows west to Femundsee in Norway. This is drained from the Gløta to the Isteren , which in turn flows over the Isterfossen to Galtsjøen . Up to Sennsjøen the river is called Femundselva . From there to Høljesjøen on the Swedish border, the river is called Trysilelva .

After a distance of about 460 kilometers, the Klarälven flows into the Vänern near Karlstad .

The Klarälven is a wild river in the upper reaches that flows through lonely forest, mountain and hill landscapes . In the lower reaches it is a tame river, only the last section flows through more densely built-up areas.

The Klarälven was the last Swedish river on which rafting was still carried out. As a reminder of this time, there are raft trips for tourists between Branäs and Edebäck .

Until the 1990s, the river was used in the lower area to transport wood. The tree trunks were simply thrown into the water and taken out again at Karlstad and processed into paper. To ensure that the wood did not run aground, the water level of the Klarälven had to be regulated, obstacles in the river bed such as stone blocks had to be removed and the course had to be straightened. In some cases, the gradient created by the barrages is still used today to generate electricity. The structural measures had devastating negative consequences for the salmonids . The migration route of the salmonids from Lake Vänern to their spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the Klarälven and its tributaries was interrupted, and the spawning and standing grounds were destroyed. In recent years the river has been partially renatured .
