Säffle is a town in the Swedish province of Värmland County and the historic province of Värmland .

The main town of the municipality of the same name was granted city rights in 1951. This made Säffle the last place in Sweden to be granted city rights, before the municipal reform of 1971 created a unified form of municipality in place of the former urban and rural communities. Säffle is on European roads 45 and 18 .

history

Tempelgraven near Säffle is Värmland's largest Neolithic stone box . Säffle is located on the Byälven , a tributary of Lake Vänern . During archaeological excavations in the urban area, a settlement from the Iron Age was found . The real development spurt did not take place until 1837 after the river had been expanded into a canal. The place received a train station on the Vänerbanan in 1879 and in 1882 received the status of a minority town ( köping ). At that time Säffle had about 700 inhabitants.

In Säffle there is the Värmlands Vikingscenter, a Viking museum and the theater facility (Säffleoperan).
