Historical market in Nysäter

Nysäter is a small town in the municipality of Säffle in the Swedish province of Värmland County . It was considered an important junction between the waterways of Vänern and Glafsfjorden and the Oslo - Karlstad road . The Säffle Canal runs near Nysäter .

There are archaeological monuments from the Iron Age and the time after the birth of Christ around the place . Four large barrows, such as the Olafshögen with a diameter of 40 meters, can be found here on the banks of the Bräven. The grave of the legendary king Olaf Trätälja is said to be located under the Olaf hill, which is also claimed by two other hills in Högsäter and Säffle . Olaf was King of Värmland and the progenitor of the Norwegian royal family. He died as a burnt offering for Odin.

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1758 as an ox market. By the time it was officially closed as a marketplace in 1869, Nysäter had 67 market stalls.

On the banks of the Bräven there has been the Värmlands Vikingacenter Viking Village Museum since the 2000s , operated by the Vikingaleden association (“Viking Trail ”). Nysäter is also the home port of the replica Viking ship Glad av Gillberga.
