Säffle Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Säffle Canal is a 91 km long canal in Sweden . This connects the Vänern with the Glafsfjorden near Arvika . The canal leads past Nysäter to Säffle on a Vänern bay. There is the only lock that compensates for a height difference of 0.65 m. When closed, the swing bridge at Nysäter limits the passage height to 4.3 m, otherwise it is 16 m. The other maximum dimensions for watercraft are 42 m in length and 7.5 m in width with a draft of 3 m.

The Säffle Canal was built between 1835 and 1837 and improved and expanded between 1866 and 1970. The official inauguration took place on October 11, 1837 by King Charles XIV in Säffle. Until the middle of the 20th century, the canal was of great economic importance for the region. Today it is only of touristic importance.

Most of the trips through the Säffle Canal were made by the small cargo ship Sydfart from 1908 to December 1964 for the Billerud pulp group .
