The coastal motor ship Sydfart is the oldest machine- powered cargo ship in the world still in service. It ran in 1879 as a steam-powered cargo ship Olof Trätälja at Thorskog on Göta älv from the stack and was after the Swedish-Norwegian legendary figure Olof Trätälja named. The ship is still in service and has been a Swedish cultural monument since 2013. The Sydfart is also the ship that has made the most voyages through the Säffle Canal . She is five years younger than the Juno , the world's oldest passenger liner still in service, and six years younger than the Nordlys , believed to be the world's oldest active sailing freighter.

history

The Sydfart was piled up in 1878 at the Petter Larsson shipyard in Thorskog near Lilla Edet . It was built from iron and Bessemer steel and equipped with a composite steam engine made by the shipbuilder. The following year, the ship was launched as Olof Trätälja for the shipowner Gustav Silvén in Säffle . Its dimensions are chosen so that it is possible to travel through the Göta Canal . In addition to the Swedish inland waters and the west coast, they were also used in the North Sea on trips to England. Mainly wood was transported, but occasionally trips with passengers were also undertaken. In 1903 the ship received a new steam boiler.

In 1908 the Billerud pulp company took over a 50% stake in the Olof Trätälja and in 1913 Billerud took over the entire ship. After the First World War, Billerud's general manager Christian Storjohann took over the management of the ship and kept it until 1947.

In 1936 the ship was transferred to Billerud's subsidiary Borgviks AB, which after 1947 transferred the management to Y. Simonson. Until the 1950s, the ship transported Billerud products from Säffle to Gothenburg and returned with general cargo and coal return loads. In 1953, the Olof Trätälja was modernized by a shipyard in Karlstad for 150,000 Swedish kronor, the rear mast was removed and the chimney shortened, the steam engine replaced with a four-cylinder alpha diesel engine with an output of 179 kW and the cargo space lengthened. After the conversion, the ship could sail with a crew cut in half.

After the last voyages in December 1964, Billerud sold the ship last operated by A. Philgren in 1965 for 140,000 Swedish kronor to the shipowner Gustaf Johan Wilhelm Sahlning from Köpmannebro, who renamed it Hamnfjord . The owners changed several times until it was sold to Olof Göran Berndtsson in Halsbäck in 1969 for 155,000 Swedish kronor and renamed Stigfjord . In 1972 Anders Ragnar Gustafsson from Lidköping bought the ship and named it Ann . In 1972 the ship also received a new main engine, a six-cylinder diesel from Volvo-Penta with 265 hp.

In 1977 Sven Larry Hansson bought the ship for 150,000 Swedish kronor and gave it its current name. He brought it to his new home port of Grönhögen in the municipality of Mörbylånga in Öland . Hansson ran the Sydfart alone at first, later when he was old enough with his son Peter until he died in 2012. After that, the Sydfart was taken over by the owner company Ångfartygsaktiebolaget in 1879, an association of several people from the shipping industry, and used from Kalmar , with the intention of keeping the ship underway . Proceeds now go directly to the maintenance and upkeep of the ship. The Sydfart has been a registered cultural monument in Sweden since 2013 .

Accidents

  • On 15 October 2007, the developed Sydfart on a trip from Bålsta to Slite with palletized concrete slabs before Landsort, south of Nynashamn, a list of 30 to 35 ° to port and put an emergency call. The helicopters then sent from Visby, a pilot boat and later coast guard vehicles accompanied the damaged vessel to the port of Södertälje. The cause of the accident was the use of unsuitable pallets on which the load slipped.
  • After a grounding in August 2019 in front of Stallarholmen am Mälaren , the Sydfart was towed free. No damage was found.
