The Juno is a Swedish passenger ship . It operates on the Göta Canal and is considered the world's oldest active passenger ship with overnight accommodation. The ship is classified as a historically valuable ship .

history

The Juno was built in 1874 at the Motala Verkstad shipyard in Motala with the dimensions 29.65 m × 6.74 m × 2.82 m as a steamship with a composite steam engine from the shipyard. She was the first ship of the shipping company Motala Ströms Ångfartygs AB in Stockholm and was originally to be named after the British naturalist " Darwin ". The contradiction of some shareholders led instead to the name Juno .

Initially the Juno operated on the Stockholm – Gothenburg route via the Göta Canal, from 1877 onwards, Kristinehamn , Karlstad , Mariestad , Lidköping , Hellekis and Sjötorp were called. In the years 1880 to 1885 the ship served a railway company, only to be used again on the Stockholm – Gothenburg route. In 1888 the shipping company was renamed Ångfartygs Ab Göta Canal .

The Beckholmen branch of the shipyard carried out the first extensive renovation in 1904. At the end of the First World War, in 1918, the owners sold the ship to a consortium of shipping companies Ångfartygs Ab Tirfing and Stockholms Rederi AB Svea .

In the war years 1940 to 1945 the Juno was launched and the ownership shares of the shipping companies changed. In 1947 Ab Svea was finally the sole owner. In 1956 the steam engine was replaced by two diesel engines and the ship was sold the following year to the Lidköpings Bogserbåts Ab shipping company in Lidköping. On the first of April of that year, this shipping company changes its name to Rederi Ab Göta Kanal . A major renovation took place in 1961 (1963) at the Karlstads Mekaniska Werkstad shipyard in Karlstad. Since then, the ship has had 29 cabins on three decks, a dining room and a saloon. In regular traffic, despite the admission to 125 passengers, only these 29 existing double cabins are occupied by a maximum of 58 people.

In 1981 the ship was transferred to Canalroute AB in Lidköping and in 1996 Rederi AB Astrea in Gothenburg acquired the ship. Five years later, Strömma Turism & Sjöfart AB from Gothenburg acquired Juno . In May 2002 the last renovation and overhaul took place at the Tjörnvarvet AB shipyard in Rönnäng , Tjörn.

In 2014, 140 years after commissioning, the ship celebrated its anniversary as the world's oldest cruise ship. In the summer it runs the route between Gothenburg and Stockholm and needs four days and three nights.

Incidents

  • On May 26, 2006, the Juno had a grounding on the Göta älv , after which the passengers had to leave the ship.
  • On May 29, 2010 the Juno collided with a sailing boat near Klevbrinken.
