Historically valuable ships in Sweden have been rated by the Statens maritima museer ( German  state shipping museums ) since 2001 . The rating is based on an assessment of the quality of the ship as a source for the history of Swedish shipping. The ships are provided with a so-called K-marking ( Swedish Kulturmärkning or K-märkning ).

The K-marking of commercial vehicles is based on principles developed by the state shipping museums in cooperation with the Sveriges Segelfartygsförening ( German  Swedish sailing vessel association ) and Sveriges Ångbåtsförening ( German  Swedish steamship association ).

The K-marking has no legal meaning, such as a classification according to the legal rules for Byggnadsminne ( German  architectural monument ) by an administrative authority or the classification as a traditional ship by the Sjöfartsverket ( Swedish Central Shipping Office ).

The state shipping museums mark ships in commercial traffic that they consider to be of cultural and historical relevance. By May 2010, more than one hundred ships had been given a K certification mark, including passenger ships, sailing boats, tugs, motor boats, torpedo boats, passenger ferries, a car ferry (Kalmar SUN VIII), two pilot ships and an excursion boat ( Paddan 4 from Gothenburg ).

From the beginning it was determined that ships with a K-mark are larger boats that meet the following criteria:

  • at least 12 meters long and 4 meters wide
  • older than 50 years (with exceptions)
  • built in Sweden or in permanent traffic under the Swedish flag.

From 2006, the criteria were revised to also take into account smaller boats that were used in professional shipping. For example, many tugs are less than four meters wide.

Criteria for pleasure craft

To qualify as a sport boat to get a C symbol, a boat must initially as an excursion boat built in Sweden and have been for the first time in service before 1965 or had been drawn by a Swedish boat designer and regularly used Sweden in the country to be or otherwise a conservation concern have the Swedish history. In addition, there are requirements for a good and seaworthy condition, authenticity and a well-documented history.

Classification as a traditional ship

The K-marking is not synonymous with the classification of traditional ships, although the criteria for the use of ships with K-marking are similar and applications can be made on the same application form. The classification as traditional ships is made by Sjöfartsverket and has legal significance. In May 2007, 55 ships were classified as traditional ships.
