Sjöfartsverket is the Swedish authority for sea and inland waterway transport. It was founded on July 1, 1969. The head office is in Norrköping .

Sjöfartsverket is the Swedish central shipping authority and is responsible for the maintenance of the fairways and port areas, the provision of pilotage services and the keeping of routes free by icebreakers . The area of ​​responsibility also includes the larger lakes Vänern , Vättern and Mälaren as well as Göta älv and the canals in Trollhättan , Södertälje and Falsterbo . His tasks also include the coordination of rescue work in the event of ship and airplane accidents at sea. The Sjöfartsverket operates the Swedish JRCC in Gothenburg. In cooperation with Trafikverket , Sjöfartsverket contributes to the planning of the traffic infrastructure.

Sjöfartsverket also has a research contract that includes, among other things, maritime safety and the impact of shipping on the environment.

Sjöfartsverket is financed to 70% through navigation and pilotage fees and the sale of nautical charts, the remaining 30% comes from tax revenues. In 2014 the total income was 2.35 billion crowns (approx. 230 million euros).
