Stockholms Rederi AB Svea (from Stockholms Rederi AB Sveabolaget , often just called Svea or Rederi AB Svea ) was a Swedish shipping company that was founded in the 1870s. It worked with a wide range of ships for freight and passenger transport, mainly with connections in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, and was one of the largest Swedish shipping companies of its time. The Stockholms Rederi AB Svea was one of the co-founders of the Silja Line and operated their ships under the names of Skandinavisk Linjetrafik, Scandinavian Ferry Lines, Linjebuss and Trave Line.

The company had a Finnish subsidiary (Oy Svea AB) and a subsidiary based in the Netherlands . In 1981 Rederi AB Svea became part of Johnson Line, but was retained as an independent brand.

history

Stockholms Rederi AB Svea was founded in the 1870s, the first ship entered service in 1872. Most of the early ships were cargo steamers, which were used in the worldwide tramp shipping . Sveabolaget then started transporting freight and passengers along the Swedish coast and in the Baltic Sea. In 1918 the cooperation with the Finland Steamship Company and the Steamship Company Bore began on the routes between Sweden and Finland. In the 1930s, Svea expanded rapidly and the fleet increased to over 100 ships.

After the Second World War , Svea began operating freight connections from southern Sweden to Denmark and Germany under the banner of the Trave Line, Skandinavisk Linjetrafik and the Linjebuss. At the same time, the Svea began operating larger freighters. One of the first modern automobile freighters was delivered to Svea in the 1960s. In 1966, Svea began working on a car and passenger connection to Great Britain with Swedish Lloyd and Ellerman's Wilson Line. As early as 1969, Svea broke up the cooperation and sold his only ship on this connection, the motor ship Svea , to Swedish Lloyd.

Difficult times for the Svea began in the 1970s. The Finnboda shipyard, acquired in 1916 , had already been sold to the Salén shipping company in the late 1960s . In 1975 50% of the Svea shares were sold to Rederi AB Nordstjernan (parent company of Johnson Line). From then on, Svea's operations were greatly streamlined. In 1976 the Trave Line was sold to the railway freight company Statens Järnvägar , and this became the Saga Line. Major changes came in 1980 for the Linjebuss small goods area, they were merged with lines of Swedish Railways and the Danish company Scandinavian Ferry Lines. In the same year, the merger of the TT-Line with the Saga Line began, from which the TT-Saga Line emerged. As a result of financial difficulties, Svea sold his shares in TT-Saga Line and Scandinavian Ferry Lines in 1981. At the end of the year she was even sold to the Johnson Line. The Johnson Line merged with Effoa in 1990 and has existed since then under the name EffJohn.
