The Dalsland Canal is an artificial waterway in Sweden that connects Lake Vänern with a number of lakes in the historic Dalsland Province and western Värmland .
The canal was built between 1864 and 1868 under the direction of the Swedish engineer Nils Ericson and, as it runs, it passes through lakes Råvarpen , Laxsjön , Lelång , Foxen and Töck until it ends in Lake Östen . Over the Foxen you get to the Stora Le , which is partly in Norway . Until the railway was built in the 1870s, iron ore and saw-timber were transported between Stora Le and Köpmannebro. The entire system is about 254 km long, but only 12 km have been re-dug or blasted out of the rock. Boats that pass through the canal pass through twelve locks and at Håverud over a prominent trough bridge that bridges rapids . The total height difference of the canal is 66 meters. The distance to today's Norwegian Haldenkanal is only 1.5 kilometers near Otteid. From 1827 to 1956 there was a raft route. For financial reasons, there is still no navigable connection. Over the Vänern you can reach the Göta and Trollhätte Canal .
