The Haldenkanal (Norwegian: Haldenkanalen); formerly Fredrikshalds Canal is a canal in the Norwegian province of Viken not far from the border with Sweden and connects the towns of Skulerud and Tistedal. It is 80 kilometers long and was built to transport tree trunks. It leads over long distances through existing lakes and connects them with one another. Besides the Telemark Canal, the Halden Canal is the only canal system in Norway with several locks. The distance to the Swedish Dalsland Canal near Otteid is only 1.5 kilometers. From 1827 to 1956 there was a raft route. For financial reasons, there is still no navigable connection.

history

The lock system in Ørje 1885

The Halden Canal is the oldest of the two canal systems in Norway. The canal was built between 1852 and 1860. The Brekke locks were built in 1852, and later the locks at Strømsfoss and Ørje followed. In 1861 the locks in Brekke were destroyed by floods. The first reconstruction took place in 1877. The current structure is from 1924. There is a memorial to the canal builder Engebret Soot, who lived from 1786 to 1859, near the Ørje lock.
