The Kust till kust-bana is a Swedish railway line that runs 353 km from Gothenburg via Borås and Växjö to Kalmar / Karlskrona . Historically, the name was only used for the route between Gothenburg and Kalmar. The 57 kilometer long section Emmaboda –Karlskrona was later included in this name by Banverket .

history

The connection, which has been marketed as Kust till kust-banan since the mid-1990s , originally runs over five different lines:

  • Gothenburg – Borås Järnväg
  • Borås – Alvesta Järnväg
  • Växjö – Alvesta Järnväg
  • Karlskrona – Växjö Järnväg and
  • Kalmar Järnväg .

The different routes were created at different times. The oldest part is the Växjö – Alvesta line, which was built by the private railway company Växjö – Alvesta Järnväg as a branch line of the Södra stambana and opened in 1865. In 1874 the lines Växjö – Emmaboda, part of the Karlskrona – Växjö railway, and Emmaboda – Kalmar, owned by the Kalmar Järnväg railway company , opened. The Gothenburg – Borås railway was not built until the 1890s (opened in 1894) and the youngest part, Borås – Alvesta, was inaugurated in 1902. Between 1938 and 1941 the individual railways were nationalized.

The Gothenburg – Borås line was electrified in 1936. Alvesta – Kalmar / Karlskrona (1954–55) and finally Borås – Alvesta in 1962 followed in the 1950s.

In 1902, shortly after the opening of Borås – Alvesta, there were direct connections between Göteborg – Kalmar and Göteborg – Karlskrona. In the 1990s, Statens Järnvägar began to market direct connections for which modern X2 trains were used.

Current condition

Nowadays, direct trains from Gothenburg to Kalmar / Karlskrona run with modern railcars (Bombardier Regina). In addition, regional traffic plays an important role on this route, especially on the sections Göteborg – Borås (SJ on behalf of Västtrafik) and (Jönköping–) Värnamo – Växjö (until 2009 by Merresor on behalf of Jönköpings Länstrafik). Kalmar – Alvesta – Malmö– Copenhagen is part of the Öresundtåg network . Freight traffic is also important.

Further future plans

There are plans to completely rebuild the Gothenburg – Borås line as a high-speed line with a top speed of 320 km / h.

The Mölnlycke – Bollebygd section is to be built by 2020, with a tunnel station going under the Gothenburg / Landvetter airport . There are also plans for a new high-speed line from Stockholm to Gothenburg ( Götalandsbanan ), which will not be completed until around 2030.

In the same time frame, a high-speed route to Malmö / Copenhagen is being considered. As of the end of 2015, two regions are applying for the route. The western alternative, which is supported by the cities of Värnamo and Ljungby, provides for construction along the E4 motorway, while the eastern alternative, with the supporting towns of Älmhult, Kalmar, Karlskrona, Lessebo and Växjö, favors a route via Älmhult and Växjö and a connection to the new line at Räppe to the Kustbana, which has been expanded to 200 km / h. A decision is expected in February 2016 at the Sverigeförhandlingen .
