Åseda is a village ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Kronobergs län and the capital of the municipality of Uppvidinge .

At first there was only one church here, which dates back to the 12th century. The name of the square, which was first documented in a script in 1345, changed over the centuries from Aseda to Aaseda, Oseda and Åsheda to the current name.

Town hall of Uppvidinge municipality in Åseda

The actual place is still very young and owes its development to a railway junction where the line Nässjö - Sävsjöström - Nybro crosses with the narrow-gauge railway Växjö - Klaveström - Viserum - Hultsfred . In its heyday, the place had over 100 employees on the railway. Little by little, various businesses emerged at the intersection, for example a dairy which was closed in 2004, several joineries and other woodworking industries. Another planned narrow-gauge railway from Mönsterås was only completed as far as Fagerhult , but was called Mönsterås – Åseda line until it was closed .

Most of the tracks have recently disappeared. The southern line to Nybro was demolished in the 1990s, the south-western branch to Växjö was dismantled in 2001 and the northern line to Nässjö was discontinued in 2002. Today, the narrow-gauge railway to Hultsfred is only used sporadically.

Åseda had administrative tasks as a municipality hall as early as 1910 and became a minority town ( Köping ) in 1942 . Åseda has been the capital of Uppvidinge municipality since 1971, but various offices are located in Lenhovda and Älghult .
