Esther San Miguel Busto (born March 5, 1975 in Burgos ) is a former Spanish judoka . She won bronze at the 2003 World Championships, was European Champion in 1998 and 2009 and has won four bronze medals at European Championships in between.

Athletic career

The 1.74 m tall Esther San Miguel fought in the light heavyweight division. In 1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006 she was the Spanish champion. Furthermore, she was once second and five times third in the Spanish championships.

In 1992 and 1993 she was third in the European Junior Championships. Her international breakthrough in the adult class came in 1998 at the European Championships in Oviedo . With victories over Christine Dorfinger from Austria in the round of 16, the German Uta Kühnen in the quarter-finals and the British Chloe Cowen she reached the final and won there against the French Celine Lebrun . The following year, she lost her opening match against the Russian Swetlana Panteleeva at the 1999 European Championships in Bratislava . With two wins in the Hope Round, she reached the battle for bronze, which she lost to the Belgian Heidi Rakels . In July 1999 she won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Palma de Mallorca . At the 1999 World Championships in Birmingham , she finished seventh after losing in the quarter-finals to Noriko Anno from Japan and Karin Kienhuis from the Netherlands in the round of hope . In 2000 she also finished seventh at the European Championships in Wroclaw . At the Olympic Games in Sydney she won her first fight after 3:46 minutes against the Taiwanese Hsu Yuan-Lin , after which she lost to Celine Lebrun in the round of 16 after 59 seconds. In the hope round she was eliminated after 17 seconds against the South Korean Lee So-yeon .

2001 Esther San Miguel retired early from the European Championships in Paris . At the 2001 World Championships in Munich she reached seventh place. After she had not competed internationally in 2002, she won the World Cup tournaments in Rotterdam and Minsk in early 2003 . At the 2003 World Championships in Osaka , she defeated the Dutch Claudia Zwiers in the quarter-finals and lost the semi-finals to Noriko Anno. In the battle for a bronze medal, she defeated Celine Lebrun. In 2004 at the European Championships in Bucharest she defeated the Polish Barbara Wojcicka in the quarter-finals . After her semi-final defeat against the German Jenny Karl , she won the battle for bronze against the Belarusian Sviatlana Tsimashenka . At the Olympic Games in Athens , she was eliminated in the first fight against the British Rachel Wilding .

In 2005, Esther San Miguel won the final of the Mediterranean Games in Almeria against Stéphanie Possamai from France . At the 2005 World Championships in Cairo, she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Claudia Zwiers. In 2006 at the European Championships in Tampere , she defeated the Belarusian Sviatlana Tsimashenka in the quarterfinals and lost to Celine Lebrun in the semifinals. The battle for bronze was won by Esther San Miguel against the Briton Michelle Rogers . The following year at the European Championships in Belgrade , she defeated Michelle Rogers in the quarter-finals and lost the semifinals against the Russian Vera Moskalijuk . She won a bronze medal by defeating Poland's Katarzyna Wrobel . At the European Championships in Lisbon in 2008, she was defeated in the quarter-finals by the German Heide Wollert . With victories over the Slovenian Regina Jemejc , Stéphanie Possamai and Sviatlana Tsimashenka, Esther San Miguel won a bronze medal for the third time in a row. At the Olympic Games in Beijing , Esther San Miguel had to last the full time in her first three fights. She won against Wera Moskalijuk, the Brazilian Edinanci Silva and the Italian Lucia Morico . In the semifinals she was defeated by the eventual Olympic champion Yang Xiuli after 4:56 minutes, she lost the battle for bronze to Stéphanie Possamai and took fifth place. Eleven years after her first European title, Esther San Miguel won the quarter-finals against Sviatlana Tsimashenka and in the semifinals against Heide Wollert at the 2009 European Championships in Tbilisi. In the final she won against the Ukrainian Marina Pryschepa . At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam, she beat the Cuban Kaliema Antomarchi in the quarterfinals . In the semifinals they defeated Marhinde Verkerk of the Netherlands, the fight for the bronze medal she lost to the Chinese Yi Sun .
