Daniel Gürschner

Daniel Gürschner (born February 27, 1973 in Altdöbern ) is a former German judoka . He was European Champion in 1998 and runner-up in the European Championships in 2000.

Athletic career

The 1.88 m tall Daniel Gürschner fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 95 kilograms and from 1998 up to 100 kilograms. In 1993 he won the European Junior Championships.

In 1996 he won his first German championship title, at the beginning of 1997 he won the World Cup in Paris. Eight months later, the 1997 World Championships took place in Paris . Gürschner defeated Israeli Ariel Zeevi in the quarter-finals . After his semi-final defeat against the Pole Paweł Nastula, Gürschner lost to the French Ghislain Lemaire in the battle for bronze . At the European Championships in Oviedo in 1998 , Gürschner won against Lemaire in the round of 16. With victories over the Hungarian Antal Kovács and the Russian Juri Stjopkin , Gürschner reached the final and won the title against the Romanian Radu Ivan . The following year at the European Championships in Bratislava in 1999 he reached the semi-finals with victories over Antal Kovács, the Belarusian Ihar Makarau and the Lithuanian Gintaras Ambraska . In the semifinals he was defeated by Paweł Nastula and in the battle for bronze to the Russian Alexander Michailin . At the 1999 World Championships in Birmingham he reached the quarter-finals with victories over Antal Kovács and the Italian Luigi Guido . In the quarterfinals he lost to the South Korean Jang Sung-ho and then retired in the hope round against the Canadian Nicolas Gill .

At the European Championships in Wroclaw in 2000 , Gürschner defeated Ihar Makarau in the quarter-finals and the Portuguese Pedro Soares in the semi-finals . In the final he was defeated by Yuri Stjopkin. The Olympic Games in Sydney were over for Gürschner after 4:52 minutes against the Brazilian Mario Sabino . At the 2001 European Championships in Paris, Gürschner defeated Ihar Makarau in the second round and lost to Ghislain Lemaire in the quarter-finals. In the hope round he beat Antal Kovács and Radu Ivan, but lost in the battle for bronze against the Georgian Iveri Jikuraulu . In 2002 Gürschner won the German championships for the second time after 1996. In 2003 Gürschner appeared again at the European Championships in Düsseldorf and lost to Jikurauli in the quarter-finals. In the hope round he defeated the Czech Tomás Kobza and the Austrian Franz Birkfellner , he lost the battle for bronze to Ihar Makarau.

Daniel Gürschner became a judo trainer after his active career. Among other things, he was Andreas Tölzer's home trainer for five years . Later he was responsible for the U23 age group at the German Judo Association.
