Frank Moreno

Frank Esteban Moreno García (born November 17, 1965 in Matanzas ) is a former Cuban judoka . He was second in the World Cup in 1989 and 1991 and won the Pan American Games in 1987 and 1991.

Athletic career

The 1.85 m tall Frank Moreno won his first Cuban championship title in the open class in 1983, another title in the open class followed in 1986. In the heavyweight division, he won a total of seven Cuban championship titles (1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1996).

Moreno won his first international medal at the Pan American Championships in Mexico City in 1984, when he was only defeated by the Brazilian Frederico Flexa in the heavyweight final . A year later, the two met again in Havana in the heavyweight final of the Pan American Championships, this time Moreno won. Moreno and Flexa also reached the heavyweight final of the Pan American Games in 1987 in Indianapolis and the Cuban won here too. In 1988 Moreno won the heavyweight final at the Pan American Championships in Buenos Aires against the Venezuelan Enzo Gianelli . The 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul were boycotted by Cuba .

At the 1989 World Championships in Belgrade, Moreno defeated the Belgian Harry Van Barneveld in the heavyweight quarter-finals and the Polish Rafał Kubacki in the semifinals .
