Ernst Lohöfener (born April 23, 1874 in Brackwede , now Bielefeld , † April 22, 1964 in Bielefeld) was a German photographer .

Life

Ernst Lohöfener was trained as a photographer in the Otto Geiseler studio, which had branches in Gadderbaum and Lemgo . In 1898 he acquired his training company located at Gütersloher Straße 18 in Gadderbaum and opened his “Photographische Kunstanstalt” there. Together with two employees, he initially devoted himself primarily to portrait photography , but was also given orders from the field of architectural and industrial photography .

Later he founded a photography guild for the entire administrative region of Minden , of which he was headmaster for many years. In 1912, together with Heinrich Baumann and Franz Packenius, he organized the photographer training in Bielefeld under the roof of the new crafts and arts and crafts school . In 1913, the guild received three rooms in which practical and theoretical specialist lessons were given for their apprentices, but also for other students. In 1932 he became an honorary member of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Lichtbildner (GDL). Shortly after the Second World War, he handed the business over to his son Horst Lohöfener, but continued to work in the business.

Lohöfener died one day before his 90th birthday on April 22, 1964 in Bielefeld. His photographic estate, which includes tens of thousands of negatives, is now kept in the Bielefeld City Archives.

From September 14, 2014 to January 25, 2015, the exhibition "Bielefeld City Portraits 1890–1930 by Ernst Lohöfener" was shown in the Bielefeld Historical Museum and in the city archive. While the city archives mainly presented portrait photographs, around 120 city views were exhibited in the Historical Museum, which were surrounded by an accessible panorama that was taken around 1900 from the tower of the Sparrenburg .
