Jean-Claude Brondani

Jean-Claude Brondani (born February 2, 1944 in Houilles ) is a former French judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1972.

Athletic career

The 1.95 m tall Brondani competed in the heavyweight division or in the open class. In 1966, 1968 and 1970 he was national heavyweight champion, in 1969, 1970 and 1972 he won the open class.

He won his first international medal at the 1964 European Amateur Championships when he finished third in the heavyweight division. In 1967 he won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Tokyo, and the following year he received another bronze medal at the student world championships. At the European Championships in 1970 Brondani won bronze in the open class. Two years later he reached the final in the open class at the European Championships in Voorburg and received the silver medal behind Dutchman Willem Ruska .

Like Ruska, Brondani competed at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in both heavyweight and open classes. In the heavyweight division, Brondani lost in the pool final against Giwi Onashvili from the Soviet Union. In the hope lap he was defeated by the Japanese Motoki Nishimura and finished fifth. Ten days later, Brondani won the pool final of the open class against the British Angelo Parisi . In the semifinals he lost to Willem Ruska and received a bronze medal.
