Norbert Nicoll (* 1981 in Eupen , Belgium ) is a Belgian political and economic scientist. He is particularly concerned with the criticism of growth and turns against neoliberalism . He is a lecturer at the University of Duisburg-Essen and a high school teacher for history and geography at the Episcopal School Sankt Vith.

Life

Nicoll studied political science, economics, and economic and social history. He wrote his master's thesis on attac Germany . In 2008 he received his doctorate in political science from RWTH Aachen University on the work and effectiveness of the New Social Market Economy initiative . He is close to the globalization-critical non-governmental organization Attac .

Positions

In his publications, Nicoll addresses media, economic and foreign policy. In his dissertation and later books he dealt with neoliberalism .

In two books in 2011 and 2016, he takes a growth-critical stance. At present, the population follows a culture that wants to solve all problems with expansion : “If the oil runs out, we will drill deeper. When one forest is cleared, we turn to the next. When a field is no longer producing enough, we apply more chemical fertilizers. If the fish stocks decline, we will continue to sail out to sea. ”Instead, he advocates a post-growth economy and calls for a sufficiency strategy to avoid a“ break in civilization ”. The change must come from the middle of society, there would be "no problem of knowledge, but a problem of action".

reception

Georg Auernheimer describes in his review of “Adieu Growth” that it fulfills all requirements to become a “standard work on the subject of limits to growth”.
