Georg Auernheimer

Georg Auernheimer (* 1939 in Trostberg ) is a German educational scientist. Until his retirement he was professor for intercultural education at the human sciences faculty of the University of Cologne . Auernheimer was a co-founder of the local research center for intercultural studies (FiSt), which was brought into being in 1996 at what was then the Faculty of Education (now the Faculty of Human Sciences). His work focuses on the theoretical foundations of intercultural education, embedded in a critical theory of education in general, a concept of intercultural competence based on a heuristic model for the interpretation of intercultural communication situations, as well as analyzes of the education system and questions about school quality.

Life

Auernheimer was trained as a primary school teacher at the Munich University of Applied Sciences and received a doctorate in educational science , philosophy and European ethnology from the University of Munich . He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Vienna and later at the then Wuppertal department of the PH Rheinland . From 1972 to 1995 he was a professor of educational science at the Philipps University of Marburg , initially with a focus on school education, later (after official rededication) with a focus on intercultural socialization research.

In October 1995 Auernheimer accepted the professorship for Intercultural Education at the University of Cologne, which he held until his retirement in March 2005. Since 2009 he has been teaching at the University of Salzburg .

In 1990 Auernheimer published the first introduction to the field of intercultural education. This was preceded in 1984 by the “Handwortbuch Ausländerarbeit” published by him, which made the interdisciplinary knowledge of the time accessible. Auernheimer was co-editor of the educational journal Democratic Education (1973–1989), member of the editorial board of the journal Migration und Soziale Arbeit (1994–2014), member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Das Argument (2004–2008) and is a liaison professor of the Rosa-Luxemburg- Studienstiftung (since 2004).

In daily media such as Freitag , Junge Welt , taz and Frankfurter Rundschau he took and continues to take positions on current issues.

Work and subject

For Auernheimer, equality and recognition are the leitmotifs of intercultural education - equality in the sense of equal (educational) opportunities and rights, recognition primarily as recognition of the respective self-definition of subjects and the relevant cultural practices, traditions and collective experiences. Pedagogy cannot create equality, but it should raise awareness of structural and everyday discrimination. Therefore, according to Auernheimer, it must make structural inequalities, especially in the education system, but also in society in general, an issue. With Stuart Hall , Auernheimer defines racism as an ideology that “naturalizes” social conditions by categorizing groups of people either according to apparent biological or fictitious cultural characteristics in order to justify inequalities. Since racism is only attractive if it is meaningful for individuals or groups, i.e. if it provides a foil for interpreting their experiences, reference to experience and the world in which they live is important in educational work. According to Auernheimer's concept, the path leads via the uncertainty of the interpretations brought along (e.g. through procedures of alienation) to the dialogical re-interpretation of experiences in the light of a critical social analysis.

Auernheimer attributes the susceptibility of intercultural communication to disruptions in particular to power asymmetries, which largely determine the frame of communication. Cultural differences are of secondary importance. The promotion of intercultural competence therefore requires sensitization for asymmetries, the collective experiences often associated with them and the ability to positively framing.

Intercultural education includes intercultural competence , but for Auernheimer it is also necessary political education that provides information about the causes of migration, social inequality, etc. As a multi-perspective education, it provides impetus to perceive yourself and your own society from the perspective of other societies. In this respect, intercultural pedagogy only accentuates the general concept of education in a special way. Because education means a conscious relationship to oneself and to society and its history, thus implies a responsible positioning also with regard to the question of what should become of us.

Most of the educational science contributions of Auernheimer are educational and school theoretical, partly educational policy content. The contributions to empirical educational research include one of the few school case studies to review the intercultural orientation of schools (Auernheimer et al. 1996), a representative teacher survey on dealing with intercultural situations in everyday school life in cooperation with a team of social psychologists led by Ulrich Wagner, and a small study on student assessment ( together with Cristina Allemann-Ghionda ).

Theoretical references in Auernheimer's work are, in addition to the pedagogical tradition, the psychology of the cultural history school ( Wygotski , Leontjew ), cultural studies in the Marxist line of tradition and theories generally oriented towards Marx in the Luxembourg - Gramsci line. The anthology Recognize inequality, recognize otherness! - Selected texts on teaching, (intercultural) education and educational policy (2010) with essays and lectures from four decades illustrate his position on educational science and educational policy.
